One canyon, two rims, zero regrets: my first R2R2R hike across the Grand Canyon
The challenge of a lifetime
I did that thing. That epic, exhausting, unforgettable thing. Rim to Rim to Rim in the Grand Canyon, one of the seven natural wonders of the world. It was my first time doing R2R2R, and while it wasn’t easy, it quickly became one of the best experiences of my life. Hiking from the South Rim to the North Rim and back tested my fitness, focus and grit.
Every hike is personal
R2R2R means something different to everyone. The experience depends on your pace, fitness level and mindset. For me, it was hard. I’m not in top shape, but I came prepared and determined. That mindset made all the difference.

A sunrise worth every step
I began at the South Rim before sunrise. The first light hitting the canyon walls as I descended was unforgettable. I hiked about 14 miles to Cottonwood Campground and rested. Later that day, I continued to the North Rim, then returned to Cottonwood. After five hours of sleep, I began my final push back to the South Rim at midnight.
The full canyon experience
That route gave me everything—sunrise views, changing temperatures and a 10-mile nighttime stretch under the stars. I wasn’t rushing to break records. I wanted the full canyon experience. And I got it.

Strangers who became trail brothers
One of the most meaningful parts of the journey was meeting two great guys, Britton and Abe. They’re from Phoenix and have been friends since high school. Whenever they get the chance, they hit the trails together. These two are seasoned hiking pros who know the Arizona backcountry well. We met on the North Rim and hiked together down to Cottonwood. Along the way, we shared stories, trail tips and encouragement. It reminded me how these kinds of adventures bring people together in the best way. We started as strangers and ended the day as friends.

Respect the canyon, respect the process
The Grand Canyon commands respect. It forces you to be present and prepared. The terrain is demanding, the conditions can shift quickly and the logistics matter. Permits are required. Water isn’t always available. Trail closures and changes are possible at any time. You cannot take this trip lightly. Planning is key.

What it gives back to you
R2R2R builds strength in more ways than one. Physically, it challenges your legs, your lungs and your limits. Mentally, it tests your patience and your problem-solving. Emotionally, it offers something rare—personal pride that comes from pushing yourself through something difficult and meaningful.
When to go
Thousands take on R2R2R each year, especially in May and October when temperatures are more manageable. These windows offer the best shot at good weather and open trails, but always check conditions before you go.
Next time: one day, one push
Now that I’ve experienced R2R2R over two days, I’m already planning my next version: doing the entire route in one single push. No overnight breaks. No campground rests. Just me, a light pack with food and water, and a commitment to finish all 47 miles in one day. I’ve seen the beauty of the canyon at every hour. Now I want to see if I can cover the full distance with endurance, focus and purpose.
A place that changes you
The Grand Canyon leaves a mark. Once you hike it Rim to Rim to Rim, something shifts. You begin to wonder what else you’re capable of. That sense of possibility stays with you and calls you back.
Gratitude for those who make it possible
Before closing, I want to thank the park rangers and every person who works to maintain the Grand Canyon. Their dedication keeps this trail safe, clean and accessible for hikers around the world. Without them, none of this would be possible. They make this place more than a destination. They make it an experience. I am also dedicating this hike to my mother (1940-2023), the rock of my life.
