My journey in Sedona is bringing me peace and new connections
As I continue to build muscle climbing Mount Wilson, I find myself immersed in a different world, surrounded by nature, guided by the rhythm of the wind and greeted by familiar wildlife. I’ve seen the same deer grazing in the same spot and watched birds play in the morning air. The Arizona breeze keeps me company as I rise through the trails of Sedona.

Today, a bird seemed to mark my trail for a good five minutes. I like to think they use the trail for fun too. I didn’t feel alone, and along the way, I met hikers with stories and smiles, and birds that swooped in and out like cheerful messengers. If you’re a hiker, you know the magic of heading up a mountain, every step connects you with something bigger than yourself.
This hike isn’t just cardio. It’s part of a broader commitment to build strength, heal, and reset. Soon, I’ll add cycling to the mix with my e-bike. My new routine includes stretching, light weight training, hiking, biking and swimming. My goal is to lose 25 to 30 pounds by the end of July. But if something goes off track, that’s okay. I’m not here to punish myself. I’m here to live with purpose, to inspire others and to find joy in the process. That’s what Diegotalks was created for.

Interestingly, the way down the mountain can be trickier than the way up. There’s a section filled with loose rocks that makes slipping easy. It’s a reminder that solid steps matter, just like in life, you have to plant yourself on what’s steady.
At the bottom, I met a retired couple from Chihuahua, Mexico. They’re traveling all the way to Canada in their RV. You can follow their adventures on Facebook: Jubiladitos Viajeros. We chatted about life, travel in the U.S. and Mexico, and how both healing and freedom often begin with simply getting out there.

This is the beauty of hiking. You reconnect with yourself, with nature, with new friends. Coming to Arizona to recover was long overdue. I’m grateful that I listened to that voice inside me telling me it was time. My mindset is different now and I hope this change stays with me for good.
Coming up, I’ve got the Sky Islands Summit Challenge in May with my amazing friend Theresa. In October, I’m taking on the R2R2R. And if all goes well, in December, I’ll head to Patagonia for El Cruce with some friends.
To everyone following my journey, thank you!
And to anyone reading this who’s struggling with weight, purpose or mindset: you can do more than you think. It starts with one step, one honest choice. This isn’t just about fitness. It’s a mental game. The mountains are hard, but your mind is stronger. Your body will follow when your purpose leads. Keep climbing.
